On the way home, she remembered with a sudden shock that she’d forgotten her phone. How long had she been gone? Well over an hour . . .

Again she pushed the speed limit and raced home. When she ran in the house and grabbed her phone, she wasn’t surprised that she had a voice mail from her aunt. Aunt Helen had called just ten minutes before, she noted with relief.

“Sweetheart, Walter woke up. Please call me when you’re up . . . ” Her aunt’s voice broke. “He’s going to be all right. They’re going to put some stents in to hold the vessels open.”

Her uncle had awakened and she hadn’t even been there. Instead, she’d been running after a boy who didn’t love her. He couldn’t possibly love her—not if he would leave her now.

She kicked off the garden clogs and put on her sneakers- the ones that she’d worn every day when her father and she had jogged and talked about whatever was on her mind. She ripped off the sweatshirt and slipped on the hot pink sweater that reminded her of her mother because it was her favorite color. She opened her jewelry box, jerked off the stupid promise ring, and put on several of the rings that her little brother had loved to play with.

Purposefully she turned and left her room. This was a day for memories of the people who had truly loved her. They might have gone on, but she still felt their love. Her gaze landed on the portrait of her aunt and uncle on the landing halfway down the stairs. A little sign hung nearby that said, “Always kiss me good night.”

A sob escaped her, but then it seemed like her uncle’s blue eyes twinkled in the morning light. They had twinkled like that with affection for her so many times. Surely they could get back to that place. She would work to erase the hurt and anger she’d seen in those eyes a few days before and try to live so that he would never be disappointed in her again.
